100-Foot Wave? American Surfer Rides Monster Wave Off Portugal In November 2011, American surfer Garrett McNamara turned in a record-setting run on a 78-foot wave off the coast of Portugal. The wave was originally described as 90 feet, but Guinness World Records officially acknowledged it in its record books as a ho-hum 78-footer. On Monday, with waves at Praia do Norte, Nazaré even higher by some estimates, McNamara claims to have bested his own record — by riding a 100-FOOT WAVE. Surf photographer Tó Mané caught the scene: Tó Mané, via Surfer Today While we await official word from Guinness, check out this footage of McNamara totally besting this beast of a wave.
