PaidContent posted a solid read on Friday evening, a soul-searching piece on the balance between internet virality and the honest truth. The key question: Do we care if something is true if it makes us feel warm and fuzzy all over? And should a website post such a piece if it doesn’t have all the facts?

To be sure, the debate will never lead to a uniform internet code, and in the grand search for page views, anything, good or bad, with “social web” potential will be posted before the facts are known. You know, like this:

Do we know if this dude’s girlfriend really left him for a “midget?” Do we know whether he really gave her gonorrhea? Do we know whether there was even anyone on the other end of the line? Nope. We don’t know. But performance art or troubled loser, one thing we do know is that it’s fun to watch this dude blow up in a McDonald’s. End of story.
