It’s a fact that those born close to Christmas get jipped when it comes to their birthdays. What can you expect if you’re sharing a birthday with Jesus Christ, and when everyone has shelled out all that cash for holiday gifts?
But this year was different for a homeless Colombian woman. Photographer Emilio Aparicio threw a birthday celebration for his friend and muse, Andrea Chaparro. The two met five years ago when he was shooting for his school thesis and began documenting those who lived on the streets.
The Internet is long on those “THIS will restore your faith in humanity stories,” but this will restore your faith in humanity.
For her special day, he arrived with all the fixings of a proper celebration: a balloon, a party hat, cake, a candle and a camera to document the festivities. He gifted her a print of herself he had taken, then gathered a group of strangers to serenade Andrea in a warm rendition of “Feliz Cumpleaños.”
Finally, Emilio urged her to write a wish on her balloon before releasing it, only for her to confess that she didn’t know how to write. Instead, he urged her to verbalize her wish. Though shy at first, Andrea let go of the ribbon with a rousing exclamation of “everyone be happy!”
Though there’s a language barrier for those of us that don’t speak fluent Spanish, Andrea’s elation and happiness clearly translates.ColombiaReports]
