Paper Planes Launched in Germany Fly Around the Globe
In one of the coolest and craziest marketing schemes yet, Samsung launched 100 paper airplanes from a balloon high above Germany, hoping they would travel around the world.
According to DVICE, “Samsung, in an effort to prove that its memory cards are durable enough for all of your high altitude paper airplane launching needs, has sponsored the launch of 100 paper airplanes from a helium balloon floating 122,000 feet above Wolfsburg, Germany. Each of the airplanes has a memory card as cargo, and the hope is that wherever the a plane lands, someone will fire up the memory card and then check in with where the plane was found.”
Don’t think it’s possible? Well, think again.
The planes, launched on January 17th, have reached as far as Australia, South Africa, India, Russia, Canada, and the United States.
The stunt is called “Project Space Planes,” but in reality the planes weren’t actually sent from space. Space is considered to start about 327,000 feet up, and these little paper guys were only launched from 122,000 feet. Impressive, but they won’t be applying to NASA anytime soon.
However, if you ever need to send a note by paper plane, Samsung’s memory cards will work just fine. It’s really a brilliant idea — and everyone knows you should always test memory cards for high altitude durability before anything else. No one cares about memory space or things like that.
