Apple Fans on iPod: “All That Hype for an MP3 Player?”
Steve Jobs changed the world. Not many people can say that literally. And while his résumé had been impressive before the introduction of the classic iPod on October 23, 2001, that’s the day in which Apple went from a cool computer company to a revolutionary innovator under Jobs’ stewardship.
But not all Apple fanboys and fangirls saw the iPod as a revolutionary device. In fact, over at MacRumors, home of the largest Apple forums on the web, angry Internet denizens immediately chimed in with snide comments and snarky cheap shots about just how unremarkable the iPod was.
Not everybody shared these anti-iPod sentiments, but there are enough to make you wonder what these haters think about their comments a decade later. From the Apple’s New Thing (iPod) thread, we’ve pulled our 10 favorite posts trashing the iPod as an overrated, expensive piece of nothing.
“iPoop… iCry. I was so hoping for something more.” –elitemacor
“Sounds very revolutionary to me.
hey – heres an idea Apple – rather than enter the world of gimmicks and toys, why dont you spend a little more time sorting out your pathetically expensive and crap server line up?
or are you really aiming to become a glorified consumer gimmicks firm?

“I still can’t believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently! Why oh why would they do this?! It’s so wrong! It’s so stupid!” –WeezerX80
“All that hype for an MP3 player? Break-thru digital device? The Reality Distiortion Field™ is starting to warp Steve’s mind if he thinks for one second that this thing is gonna take off.” –nobodyspecial
“Not exactly ‘revolutionary’. With the economy in its current state, You’ll be able to pick up MP3 players for peanuts soon. The Archos Jukebox does the same thing and it’s not blowing off the shelves either. $399 is just too much for an MP3 jukebox. Sorry Steve, this isn’t it…” –idoru1135
“Their invitation promised a groundbreaking digital device and they did not deliver. I wonder how many reportes from outside the Mac press will show up next time they release a ‘groundbreacking digital device?’ Think Different is dead.” –Fat Tony
“I said the Cube was overpriced and should cost $1200, this piece of Sh… should cost no more than $90. Apple is selling a bunch of overpriced things like the TiBook that won’t be resellable for more than $1300 in less than 6 month because it is not upgredable. This iPod is for spoil rich kids with insane parents or an Apple fan as fannatic as a Taliban. It has good features but forget about getting it for $399!!!! Never, who gets that thing is a very stupid person.” –mymenory
“Lots of hype. Now I gripe. 400 bucks! Is Steve nuts? Digital hub??? What a flub! Stupid name. Who to blame? Come on folks-no more jokes…” –Smelt
“i just marvel at the squandered potential of such design and thought at the hands of junior college marketers and accountants. doesn’t anybody over there ever look at a price tag!?” –myassmuh
“trully revolutionary MY ASSSS!” –fragiledreams
Oh, Internet, you’re still the same 10 years later. Thankfully, there’s this forum post from someone named “troy wilson” later in the thread: “Oh…my…god. I can only shake my head and smile in amazement at you people. What a bunch of doom and gloom cynic crybaby beeotches. Am i in a mac forum? I had to check about a hundred times. The ipod is sick.”
Well said, man. It was sick, and it only got sicker. Steve Jobs, here’s to you.
