California suffered through its driest year on record in 2013. Ever. Never been drier.

This presents a problem, not only for drought emergencies throughout the state, but for the wildfires that will be ignited. We’re two weeks into the year and already this wildfire burning in the hills just north of the San Gabriel Valley community of Glendora is burning out of control. These AP photos are simply incredible.

Earlier on Thursday, Nathan Judy, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service, said more than 1,700 acres had burned. Three people were in custody as of Thursday morning on suspicion of recklessly causing the fire.
