In just a few weeks we will pause and mark the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing. One victim is proving that although the blasts that day were life-altering, they were not life-ending.

Jeff Bauman, 28, was waiting at the marathon finish line last year when the bombs went off, and he subsequently lost both of his legs. At the time, he was waiting for his girlfriend Erin Hurley, 27, who was running the race. This photo of him became the iconic image of the aftermath of the explosions.

Bauman helped cracked the case. He woke up in the hospital after the bombings and immediately requested pen and paper: “bag, saw the guy, looked right at me,” he wrote, according to a tremendous Bloomberg report.

Now Bauman and his girlfriend have announced they’re engaged to be married. But that’s not all: Hurley is pregnant with the couple’s first child. They made the big announcement via Jeff’s Facebook on Sunday.

“We are so happy to share with you exciting news that has happened over the last few months…Jeff and Erin became engaged and are expecting their first child in the summer!!!”

The child is due on July 14 and they plan on marrying sometime next year. While 2013 was obviously a very bad year for Bauman and Hurley, 2014 is shaping up to be one for the books. Literally. Bauman’s book “Stronger” will be released on April 8, just a week before the anniversary.

Bauman and Hurley live in Carlisle, Massachusetts, 19 miles northwest of Boston, and are planning for the arrival of the baby. Even though they lost a lot last April, it seems like perhaps they gained even more. It’s hard to call Bauman a “victim” when his story is so triumphant.
