It’s all cute and safe when Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne jumps inside an inflatable balloon and crowd-surfs at nearly all of his shows.
It’s not at all cute nor safe when Russian tourists at the Dombai ski resort in Abkhazia try the same. If you’re going to roll down a hill inside a Zorb, doing so on top of a steep mountain slope will present life-ending problems.
It starts off light and fun. The end is haunting.

One man was killed and another was injured when the transparent balloon they were traveling in got away from someone charged with catching it at the bottom of the hill, only for the Zorb to roll down into a gorge. About a mile later, the Zorb hit rocks in a remote area. Denis Burakov was killed; his companion inside, Vladimir Shcherbakov, somehow escaped death.
Burakov died on the way to the hospital, according to Lenta.
Translated reports suggest the price for a ride down the hill in the Zorb is about 300 rubles — that’s roughly $9 US dollars.
The incident occurred on January 3 in Dombai. At this time there is no word about a criminal investigation into whether the staff had proper permits and licenses for this type of activity, Lenta reported.
