Notice anything strange about this sign?
Even if you’re not bilingual (or bi-curious about language), even if you don’t speak a word of Spanish, clearly these signs have different identifying words. “Violadores” and “accion policial” stand out in the Spanish version.
As it turns out, this sign, and a few others just like it, have been posted at playgrounds in Milford, Delaware. The English language version makes it clear that children need adult supervision, no more, no less. The Spanish language version not only says that users need a permit to play there, but that violators may face police action if they fail to obtain one.
Conservative radio host Dan Gaffney first publicized the story with a photo on his Facebook page. At least there is bipartisan outrage on this modern-day equivalent of “Whites Only,” Daily Kos blogger Delaware Dem noted.
But there is a somewhat happy ending here. Milford School District Superintendent Dr. Phyllis Kohel, who is new to the district and started after the signs had been posted, learned of the signs and immediately told her husband to grab his tools so they could immediately remove them.
If you want something done right and not racist, you do it yourself.
