Big news on Friday: Oscar Pistorius was granted bail and survived a two-hour-long bail hearing filibuster by magistrate Desmond Nair, who laid out the victim’s history with the accused as if officiating a wedding and explained the history of bail as it relates to the Boer War. Riveting stuff. This pic from the hearing says it all — the photographers, the pose, the backlight: perfect.

Pistorius’ bail has been set at 1 million rand, which translates to about $112,000 USD. He was ordered to avoid his home, witnesses and the family of Reeva Steenkamp, as well as surrender his passports.

The next phase of the trial will begin June 4.
