Sometimes it’s very hard to keep up your faith in humanity.
Three people were charged Wednesday in connection to mercilessly whipping a 21-year-old Newark man after a video of the heinous crime appeared online. The video shows the teen being forced to strip naked, then he was whipped repeatedly as his assailants laughed and joked about the abuse. All over a $20 debt. Fair warning, the video is hard to watch.
The three people arrested have been identified:
They were identified as 22-year-old Ahmad Holt, 31-year-old Raheem Clark and 23-year-old Jamaar Gray. Police say Holt administered the beating, using a belt provided by Clark. Charges include robbery and aggravated assault. Police say only one of the men has an attorney, but they didn’t provide a name.
Many community leaders in Newark see this crime as a fundmental failure of their own community to prevent acts like these. With a news conference from Mayor Cory Booker yet to come, leaders are looking to demonstrate to the community that senseless acts of violence like this will not go unpunished.
According to Fox News:
Corey Booker, mayor of New Jersey’s largest city, and police brass will hold a news conference Wednesday on the investigation, sparked by a troubling video that garnered national attention and drew more than 40,000 views on YouTube since being posted last week. It’s unclear when the 2-minute clip, which has been called “sickening” by Police Director Samuel DeMaio, was made. The video shows the unidentified teen being forced to strip naked, then whipped with a belt because, according to the assailant, his father owed someone $20.
