Macho Men: First WWE Superstar Comes Out, Gay Boxer Proposes to Boyfriend SHARE: Tweet It’s been a big year in world of sports and equality. In February and April, respectively, Robbie Rogers and Jason Collins each came out publicly to become the handsome LGBT faces of male team sports. Now, we’ve got the first openly gay WWE wrestler and an openly gay boxer proposing to his boyfriend on Facebook. In an interview with TMZ, at an airport no less, WWE wrestler Darren Young shocked the cameraman by announcing he was gay when asked if he thought a gay wrestler could be successful in WWE: Perfect answer: “Absolutely,” he said. “Look at me. I’m a WWE Superstar and to be honest with you, right now, I’ll tell you I’m gay and I’m happy. Very happy.” WWE superstar John Cena told TMZ he was very proud of his fellow wrestler for coming out. “I know Darren personally. Darren’s a great guy. That’s a very bold move for him. And congratulations for him for actually finally doing it. For us, it’s entertainment … and if you’re entertaining you shouldn’t be judged by race, creed, color or sexuality … as long as you’re entertaining.” Even though just about every kid in America thinks “wrestling is gay,” this is the first time a WWE wrestler has publicly identified themselves as gay or lesbian, according to CBS Washington. In the past, a few wrestlers have chosen to come out within the confines of the locker room, but they have kept their sexual preference from the public. Big milestones everywhere. Cruz became boxing’s first openly gay athlete when he publicly came out last October. Now, he’s making headlines again for proposing to his longtime boyfriend. According to NBCLatino, Cruz popped the question in a video posted on his Facebook. Unfortunately, the video has since been taken down, but here’s a transcription: “I wanted to tell you how much I need you and how much I miss you,” Cruz said in the video. “I know you are a person that means a lot to me and that supports my career and respects it which is very important, but above all you are always there giving me that push that I need. Now more than ever that I have an important fight coming up for the World Championship,” Cruz said in Spanish. “I want to tell you that you are a very special person in my life. I am a little nervous, but I want to tell you and share with your friends and my friends if you want to marry me. I want you to be part of my life and me be part of yours.” So what his boyfriend say? He posted a Facebook video of his own: “I want to say yes. I accept marrying you because I love you and adore you,” he said. “Yes, I do want to marry you because I love you, I love you, I love you very much. We will keep going forward and you will see how happy we will be. I love you papi from my heart.” Dawww. This just goes to show gays are everywhere, and it’s awesome.
