Update: The dog has been reportedly rescued … See below.
If you’re keeping track, it’s not a good week to be gay in Tennessee … for man or beast. On Wednesday there was the resurrection of the infamous “Don’t Say Gay” bill, with a new measure that requires teachers to inform the parent or legal guardian if their child is gay.
That same day, Jackson TN Euthanasia posted a photo of a cute li’l pup who had been turned over to the shelter because his owner suspected his dog of being gay after he witnessed him humping another male dog.
The shelter wrote on its Facebook page:
This guy was signed over to RC, not bc he’s mean or bc he tears things up, but because… His owner says he’s gay! He hunched another male dog so his owner threw him away bc he refuses to have a “gay” dog! Even if that weren’t the most assinine thing I’ve ever heard, its still discrimination! Don’t let this gorgeous dog die bc his owner is ignorant of normal dog behavior! He’s in kennel 10L and he WILL be put down tomorrow bc there is no room at the inn!
It’s hard to fathom the amount of self-loathing and denial that would cause an owner to discard this poor sweet animal because of his own deep-seated sexual insecurities. The fate of the dog is yet unknown, but hopefully given the viral nature of the story, someone’s rescued him and other animals at the shelter from such an unnecessary fate.
Update: It’s being reported by PinkNews that the dog, which had only been given a day to live, has been rescued. Stephnanie Fryns posted on the Facebook page of the organization saying that she had spoken to the kennel and arranged to adopt the dog. We’ll update again when we can confirm.TowleRoad]
