Student Orgy–Hosting Teacher Faces 20 Years, $50,000 Fine

UPDATE: Colleps was convicted of 16 counts of having improper relationships with students and sentenced to five years in prison.

Back in 2011, Brittni Colleps, a Texas high school English teacher and basketball coach, was arrested after accusations that she hosted, and participated in, group sex with five male students. While the men involved were all of legal age, Texas law strictly prohibits teachers from sexual contact with students.

Colleps now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years and a $10,000 fine for each of her five charges.

It’s a steep, steep sentence. The students all said they didn’t consider themselves victims and didn’t want their teacher prosecuted. While the law exists to prevent abuses of power, there’s little doubt that the scenario was consensual or that any student felt coerced into sex with Colleps. One said he was “happy” to be at Colleps’ house. “I was just amazed.”

During the trial this week, prosecution showed the jury cellphone footage of the orgy. Colleps’ face was not visible, but a student identified a distinctive lower-back tattoo that identified the teacher, 28. Multiple students shared their stories of sex with Colleps:

Former students Mark and Aaron testified Tuesday that their sexual relationships with Colleps began with the exchange of text messages that quickly turned sexual. …

Jordan testified that he went to Colleps’ house twice and engaged in group sex and that he recorded the last encounter using Aaron’s phone.

He said that from the start, the students discussed having to keep quiet about their activities because they didn’t want Colleps to get in trouble.

And yet, Jordan testified, he was called into the school office May 11, 2011, and questioned about it by school officials. He said he initially denied the relationship, not out of embarrassment, but because “I didn’t want to get her in trouble.”

“I was trying to save her,” Jordan testified. …

Colleps cooked the students spaghetti, then showed them sex toys — some of which lighted up — and modeled some lingerie.

He said the friends went into the back yard with Colleps, where they played a game of truth and dare.

John testified that after Jordan was dared to have sex with Colleps, all the students eventually made their way into her bedroom, where they had sex with her.

Colleps knew the rules and the risks, and so did her students. If Colleps receives her full sentence, it will be a message to the state that a zero-tolerance policy exists for a reason. The judge may seek to avoid establishing a precedent for lenience in student-abuse cases — for good reason. But does the context justify a harsh sentence?
