In 1991, police had a perfect opportunity to nab Jeffrey Dahmer. The confessed serial killer had already abused and disposed of about a dozen young men, and he’d go on to kill at least five more.
But in the wee small hours of May 27, a Dahmer victim escaped his custody, only to be served back up to him on a silver platter by the police. A 14-year-old boy named Konerak Sinthasomphone emerged from Dahmer’s apartment, naked, stumbling, bleeding from the rectum. Here’s what happened next, according to this 1991 article from the New York Times.
Neighbors called the police on May 27, when saw a young boy, now identified as Konerak [Sinthasomphone], on the street near Mr. Dahmer’s apartment building. He was naked, bleeding and disoriented, apparently because he had been drugged. Witnesses said the police returned the boy to Mr. Dahmer after Mr. Dahmer told the officers that they quarreling lovers.
The officers “returned to boy” to Dahmer’s custody. He was then murdered.
Hey, if it worked for Dahmer, it might work for anyone, right?
A similar situation almost unfolded this week in Woodburn, Oregon, where a 12-year-old boy managed to escape the clutches of Rev. Angel Armando Perez, the parish priest at St. Luke Catholic Church in Woodburn.
The boy, “panting and out of breath,” ran into Jesse Curths and Heather Rodriguez, whom he begged for help. Perez then appeared, wearing only underwear, the pair told The Oregonian.
“He was staring at us,” Rodriguez said. “Then he stood there with his hands on his hips like, ‘You’re really not going to give him to me?'”
The gall. Thankfully this played out differently than in Milwaukee in 1991.
Instead of “returning the boy” to Perez’s custody like the police did in Milwaukee in 1991, Curths and Rodriguez told the priest they’d be calling the authorities, and Perez jogged away. Police arrived and acted appropriately, safely taking custody of the boy and beginning an investigation.
The unidentified boy explained what Perez had allegedly done:
The Salem boy told authorities that Perez had asked his parents a few days earlier if he could take him on a trip to the mountains. He and his family attended a community church event Sunday night, and the 12-year-old went with Perez that night to the pastor’s house, a grayish-green home less than 200 paces from the church’s front door.
The boy told police Perez gave him a beer and they watched a movie. The boy told investigators that an air mattress was set up on the living room floor for him to sleep on. He said he fell asleep on the mattress, the affidavit said.
Later, the boy said, he was “woken up by a couple of flashes.”
He said that when he opened his eyes, he saw Perez next to the air mattress, with one hand on the boy’s genitals and one hand holding a cellphone. The boy discovered his underwear and shorts lowered to his knees, while Perez was dressed in underwear and a T-shirt, the boy told police.
Perez, according to the report, drove to the boy’s home early Monday and told the family, “I am very sorry; I made a mistake.”
The priest was arraigned via video call on Tuesday.
He now faces “allegations of first-degree sexual abuse, abuse of a child in the display of sexually explicit conduct, furnishing alcohol to a minor and driving under the influence of intoxicants,” according to the report.
