Prezzy Got Fingered

Posted January 26, 2012 8:46am by

President Barack Obama touched down on the tarmac on Wednesday, and no sooner than he stepped off Air Force One into the warm embrace of the Arizona sun did Gov. Jan Brewer get in his face.

Here’s what we know: Brewer reportedly handed Obama a letter requesting an official meeting about his administration’s handling of illegal immigration. The president then informed her that the last time they met in the Oval Office she had improperly recounted the story in her book, “Scorpions for Breakfast,” in which she criticized Obama for opposing her state’s controversial “Show Me Your Papers” law. Brewer then launched into a bit of a tirade and wagged her finger at the president.

Brewer recounted her version of the altercation to the press corps later: “He was a little disturbed about my book. I asked him if he read the book. He said he read the excerpt. So.”

Brewer later said the president was “somewhat thin-skinned and a little tense, to say the least.” President Obama told ABC the whole thing was “blown out of proportion.”

Whatever the true cause of the fight, Obama is the President of the United States, and when a state governor hands him a letter, it’s probably best to take it, say thanks, and walk away. A valuable lesson: Never “punch down,” it diminishes your stature and raises that of your opposition.

Make no mistake — this is exactly what Jan Brewer wanted. She’s the big winner. Her prize? A round of talk-radio interviews in which the right-wing echo chamber hails her as a hero. Oh, and book sales. Her book “Scorpions for Breakfast” skyrocketed up the Amazon charts on Thursday.

Hey, at least Brewer remembered her words this time. You may remember she has a habit of losing her train of thought in the middle of a sentence, like this gubernatorial debate in 2010:

Only Republicans and Caucasians would think it is cute for any citizen, Governor or not, to point there finger in the face of the President of the United States of America, and call themselves standing toe to toe with him. As far as “feeling minimized” during her conversation with the President at the White House on immigration; she IS minimized, as is any other citizen beside the stature of the President of the United States of America. Show some respect, Brewer, this isn’t slavery days, and you are not the one in the Main House this time.
