Human Rights Campaign on Monday published the Holy Grail of documents that outline a winning strategy for the anti-LGBT movement. Unsealed in Maine, the “confidential” 2008-09 report to the National Organization for Marriage Board of Directors is a glorious how-to for manipulative race-baiters.

These are the two most damning paragraphs:

“The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks—two key Democratic constituencies. Find, equip, energize and connect African American spokespeople for marriage, develop a media campaign around their objections to gay marriage as a civil right; provoke the gay marriage base into responding by denouncing these spokesmen and women as bigots…”

“The Latino vote in America is a key swing vote, and will be so even more so in the future, both because of demographic growth and inherent uncertainty: Will the process of assimilation to the dominant Anglo culture lead Hispanics to abandon traditional family values? We must interrupt this process of assimilation by making support for marriage a key badge of Latino identity – a symbol of resistance to inappropriate assimilation.

The documents, which were uncovered as part of a campaign finance investigation, also talks about “sideswiping Obama,” a “social radical,” and making a big deal of “side issues” like pornography.

The strategy unfurled in these confidential documents should come as no surprise to anyone who follows NOM’s Trail of Tears. And, yes, this is surely a smoking gun for anyone who wishes to expose this group for the frauds they are. But are you surprised? Should we be shocked by this? Isn’t this exactly the type of manipulative strategy you’d expect from an organization that has dedicated itself solely to denying unalienable rights to certain communities and rolling back others?

More to the controversial point, isn’t this exactly what they *should* be doing? If you’re a political organization hellbent on creating second-class citizens, and your goal is to have your ideas codified into law, how can we be surprised that a group like this would use “any means necessary?” Remember, this was a 2008-09 report, meaning there was blood in the minority-vs-minority water after the Prop 8 vote in California showed the African-American community may be susceptible to this strategic “thinking” (a subsequent report stated black support for Prop 8 was exaggerated by exit polls, but there was enough of a media frenzy that NOM could be excused for thinking it’s just crazy enough to work).

It’s disgusting, it’s immoral, it’s a throwback to an earlier hate-filled time. But while the LGBT community celebrates the outing of this report, you best believe NOM is gathering in a room and devising equally sinister plans as we speak. Because that’s what they do. That’s who they are.
