Father of the Year Makes Half-Naked 4-Year-Old Do Push-ups in Snow to ‘Man Up’
Our famous Mother of the Year 2011 contest is over and done, and the way 2012 is shaping up, it looks like this year belongs to the dads. Here’s a top contender: China’s He Liesheng, who on a visit to New York made his crying son run around and do push-ups in a snow-covered Central Park, wearing nothing but gym shoes and underpants, his skin visibly red.
Yay, child abuse! What in the name of fuck would make you do this to your kid?
Oh, of course: He thinks his 4-year-old is not manly enough. After his son, Ho Yide, was born with some developmental difficulties, He wanted Ho to develop a “masculine temperament,” so he began a strict “training” regimen, feeding him ice cream on winter days “to train his stomach to get used to the cold” and even throwing the boy into freezing water to “toughen him up.”
“He wasn’t very happy when he felt the cold,” said He. No shit.
Fellow Chinese are calling He “Eagle Dad,” apparently for pushing his wussy-ass egret out of the nest. Christ, don’t glorify this asshole. Making your kids do lots of homework is one thing. Harsh, destructive, damaging, but not sadistic. Expecting your developmentally disabled son to behave like Teddy Roosevelt (or this kid) is on a different level altogether.
Dads, if the only way your kid can win your respect is by masochistic demonstrations of pain tolerance, he’s gonna grow up to be a hollow shell of a person with irreparable self-worth issues. If your kid is born with disabilities and you tell him that the way he is — due to your fucked-up genes, you idiot — is not OK, he will hate himself, and you, for the rest of his life, and it will be your fault for teaching him that machismo is the only thing that defines being a man.
