In case you missed it — easy to do, as it only lasted a second — singer M.I.A. flipped the bird while performing during Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime show last night, entirely upstaging every other performer, including athletes, at the event. Check it out below (starts at 1:00).

Of course, the media’s heads exploded.

NBC and the NFL both blamed each other. NFL: “There was a failure in NBC’s delay system. The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans.” NBC: “The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show.”

These people below had funny things to say about it. David Carr tried to analyze the “big statement of personal brand.” The rest of us were only too happy to wonder aloud: Does anyone care about a finger anymore? Does anyone care about anyone who cares about a middle finger? Is this really what passes for rebellion nowadays? And how much is that single second going to cost NBC?
