Yet Another Chinese Basketball Exhibition Ends in a Brawl

Over the summer, we got China vs. Georgetown.  Earlier this week, fans of exhibition basketball brawls were treated to Rocky-Apollo II when the Chinese Basketball Association club Foshan Longlions squared off with the Melbourne Tigers of the Australian league.

According to China Daily, an Australian guard intentionally fouled a Foshan forward “in protest of the officiating as Foshan led 109-105 with 20 seconds left in the final period.”

The Chinese team retaliated and the two sides exchanged punches and kicks. The game ended prematurely and fans expecting to see some quality basketball were instead shocked by yet another Chinese basketbrawl.

The good news is that according to a statement released by the Foshan Longlions, the two teams have since made up, and the Chinese team is “so sorry” for their “reckless behavior.”

Perhaps, even crazier, this wasn’t the only basketball game in China to end in a brawl. Just a day before, a team from Jiangsu and a squad from the United States came to blows.

That would be bad enough, but then there is this revelation from the China Daily article:

Last October, the Chinese national team’s Asian Games warm-up against Brazil was marred by a fight that left several players hurt. FIBA, the sport’s world governing body, imposed suspensions and fines on China’s head coach, Bob Donewald, and some of the players.

The China team also fought visiting US all-star teams in 2001 and 2003, and the Lebanon national team at the 2001 Asian Basketball Championships. At the Stankovic Cup in 2005, China received a fine totaling $176,000 for an ugly melee with Puerto Rico.

What is up with Chinese basketball and fighting? They’re beginning to make the NBA look tame by comparison.
