WTF? HuffPo Posts a Story That Happened Almost a Year Ago
What do you do when you’re stranded at an airport in Dubai and all your friends and family are expecting you at your wedding in London? Get married over Skype and broadcast it to all of your guests.
It’s a heartwarming story that the Huffington Post brought us today, there’s only one problem: The story happened, and was reported by international media, almost a year ago.
Huffington Post, which recently made headlines by being bought out by AOL, posted the feel-good story as if it had just happened. The couple was grounded in Dubai because of the volcanic ash in Iceland that halted European travel for days last April, a fact that’s referenced in the story. You can see their original story here.

According to the site the post went up today just before noon. As is typical for a blog they linked to other news stories about the event and embedded video. The problem was that all of the stories were from when this actually happened last April. Did Huffinton Post think it was such a slow news day it was okay to start doing reruns of the news? Did they think we’d forget there wasn’t a volcano spewing ash across Europe right now?
Is this what they mean with their big announcement of hires today for “doubling down” on original reporting? Maybe a buyout was just the thing to drop the quality of their content. Is this an AOL business plan? Run feel-good, heartwarming content even though it’s not even remotely news? Think Michael Calderone will take this up as his first story as HuffPo’s new senior media Reporter.
UPDATE: Huffington Post just updated their original story to include:
A California couple joined Murtagh and Mead in celebrating this rare event this past weekend: a Skype wedding. Samuel Kim and Helen Oh, both 27, married via Skype, the O.C. Journal Register reported.
According to Reuters, Kim had become ill with a lung infection, but that didn’t stop him from marrying Oh via Skype from a California hospital. Family and friends tuned in.
Hmmm. Still seems a little suspect to us.
