If someone steals money to pay for Internet porn, does that make their crime doubly offensive? If that same someone stole $130,000 from the business he worked at and used “much of it” for his masturbatory habits, would we be better off teaching him how to use the Internet and BitTorrent better?

Mickey Leroy Webster, 61, faces felony charges of theft in a business setting and identity theft for financial gain, the Duluth News Tribune reports. He’s been released on a $20,000 bond on the condition he has no contact with the business from which he stole.

To make it worse — that doesn’t seem possible, given that he stole $130K to pay for Internet porn — he embezzled the money from the business of a longtime friend! David Sigfrids and Webster, who was also the Solon Springs town supervisor, had been friends for 30 years.

They first met as employees of the city of Superior, Minnesota. Sigfrids started Great Lakes Pipe Service Inc. in 2000, and soon thereafter, he hired Webster.

“It did come as a shock to me,” said Sigfrids. “I trusted him. I lost a good friend.”

According to the criminal complaint:

A review of the business’ financial transactions from Jan. 1, 2007, to Jan. 31, 2011, showed about $192,000 in unauthorized payments, including $40,000 funneled through the bogus account, according to the complaint.

Superior Police Detective Michael Jaszczak interviewed Webster. Jaszczak said Webster admitted he would deposit checks written to the business into the unauthorized account and either withdraw money or transfer it to his personal account.

According to the complaint, Webster told Jaszczak that more than $12,000 in direct payments to credit card companies was most likely for his Internet sex habit and online pornography, as was much of what was funneled through the unauthorized bank account. During three months in 2010, when he was supposed to be taking a pay cut, he paid himself another check to make up for it, he said.

Even after taking into account items on the list of transactions that Webster claimed were either all or a percentage of legitimate business expenses, the missing money totaled between $132,000 and $137,000, the complaint said. Webster was amazed at the amount being over $130,000.

The embezzlement occurred last January, but Webster is only now just making it through the court system. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 16. If convicted, he faces a combined sentence of up to 16 years in jail and up to $35,000 in fines.

As Will Hunting would say, “You just paid $130,000 for a spank bank you could’ve gotten for free on the Internet or at a library.” How do ya like them apples?

But, seriously, how does one even spend $130,000 on porn? Why not hire like a million hookers?
