No Radiohead, no problem. The growing #OccupyWallSt crowd was treated to an impromptu show by an indie rock darling anyway on Tuesday night. Only it was former Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Magnum and his guitar, not Thom Yorke & His Limber Dance Moves.
Jeff Mangum continued his recent comeback with a no-publicity, no-frills set down in Lower Manhattan, playing a full unamplified set that included In the Aeroplane Over the Sea favorites like “Holland, 1945,” “Oh Comely,” and “Two-Headed Boy.” Watch the recorded (incorrectly titled) feed here:
If only George Carlin were still alive, he’d make a great guest for the Zuccotti Park crowd. The truth, though, given that he despised Wall Street *and* entitled youth culture, he’d probably love the cause but hate the protesters. Still, his words about Wall Street from 2005’s “Life is Worth Losing” ring as true today as six years ago: “It’s a big club, and you ain’t in it.”
Carlin’s prophecy is dead-on: “Nobody seemed to notice, nobody seems to care. That’s what the ‘owners’ count on, the fact that Americans will probably remain willfully ignorant of the big red, white and blue dick that’s being jammed up their assholes every day. Because the ‘owners’ of this country know the truth, it’s called The American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.”
Seems like somebody is waking up. Carlin would be proud. And grumpy. And sour. But proud, too.
