[VIDEO] Post Office Uses Nuclear Option on Neighborhood After Dog Bites Carrier

Posted May 9, 2011 12:13pm by

So much for “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” Now we know what can stop the mail from being delivered.

According to KNBC in Los Angeles, the post office stopped mail delivery for an entire neighborhood in the San Pedro area of Los Angeles, California, after the mail carrier was bit on the hand by a dog at a single home. An entire neighborhood? That can’t be right. Can it? It can:

Doesn’t it seem like something is missing from this story? The post office won’t begin delivering the mail to the neighborhood until they have proof that Broxton is gone from the house, but the dog has been gone from the house for some time, at least according to the news report.

There’s a serious disconnect going on between the family and the post office, and certainly the post office and the rest of the neighborhood. Is it USPS policy to stop mail in a blanket area when they have been attacked by a dog? How is that in anyway serving your customers?

It’s one thing to punish the family for having a dog that causes the mail carriers to feel threatened, but it’s another thing entirely to punished the neighborhood out of spite. Just ignore the house, how hard is that?!? Walk on the other side of the street. Toss the mail paperboy-style into the yard.

All of those would be reasonable solutions. Ignoring an entire neighborhood is not.

As a mail carrier, let me fill you in some info.

I delivered to a house with two huge german shepards. These dogs were the friendliest dogs, they let me pet them, and would even bring me a ball to throw for them. They would fetch it and bring it back to me.

The owners were NEVER home when I delivered.

But, one day the lady of the house was home. I pulled up and honked, as I usually do, the dogs came out wagging their tails and one even got the ball and started towards my vehicle.
As soon as the lady opened up the door, their whole demeanor changed! They growled and ruffed the fur up, the whole bit.

So even if your dog plays with your kids and is the “friendliest dog in the world”. Things can change when a “stranger” shows up and they go into defense mode.

The writer of this article should check all his or her facts. The fact is that the same dog attacked the same carrier twice. The second attack happened at least a half block away from the dogs house. Articles from other news agencies stated that the family admitted that the dog was back at the house when day care could not be found. Did the Post Office act out of spite?… or did they take action to ensure the safety of their employees and the general public. Ultimately it comes down to a lack of responsibilty on the part of the dog’s owners. As a final note think about this, last year a carrier was killed by an attacking dog, and no he was not bitten to death he was knocked to the ground and died from head trauma when his head struck the pavement.

There is nothing wrong with the actions taken by the Post Office. This is a reaction to a known threat, and previous instances of attack. A neighborhood in which I once resided was on a do-not-deliver zone for our local Domino’s Pizza. Apparently, various drivers had been shot and killed when certain neighborhood elements would phone for a pizza delivery and shoot the drivers as some sort of pattern. Refusing service to an area was a safety measure.

Although I love dogs, I understand that dog ownership is a responsibility. If a dog I owned had a habit of getting out of my yard, and attacking people, I would most definitely understand if the animal was put down. I would also take complete responsibility if my lack as a pet-owner caused my entire neighborhood to be marked as a non-safe zone and non-delivery zone. Don’t blame the Post Office for lack of customer service. The actions which led to this unfortunate situation lies completely with the irresponsible dog owner.
