A computer repair business called CP Distributor paid $240 to a designer for an ad in America’s Favorite Coupon Book, which was distributed in Florida earlier this month. Here’s the finished product:

Awww, and the designer even put a cute little bear holding a laptop in the upper left corn…wait, a second, that’s no ordinary cartoon teddy bear. That’s “Pedobear,” the 4chan-inspired Internet meme known to show up in stories related to child pornography. Turns out, the ad’s designer slipped Pedobear into the ad without the knowledge or consent of CP Distributor’s owners.

Here’s where this story takes a funny turn. The inside joke could have just been a random lulz-generator for the designer. Or, it could be related to not one but two Pedobear coincidences.

“CP” happens to be an acronym for “child pornography,” so the designer could have been poking fun at a company that claims to be a computer parts distributor but in essence is billing itself to those in the know as a Child Pornography Distributor. The other, more unfortunate, coincidence is that one of the company’s principals is a convicted sex offender “who spent seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a child under the age of 12,” according to The Smoking Gun. TSG reports:

Robert Dicks, the ex-con who runs the Lakeland computer repair business with his sister and brother-in-law, told TSG that “we didn’t know anything about the bear or what it was when the coupon book was published.” Dicks, 55, noted that the firm approved the ad before its publication, but stressed, “We’re a legitimate business.”
He said that after his company recently began receiving e-mails complaining about the ad, it contacted the coupon book publisher, which disavowed knowledge about the significance of “Pedobear.” TSG messages seeking comment from Dick Davis and Bruce Hughart, executives with America’s Favorite Coupon Book, were not returned.

When a TSG reporter sought to ask Dicks, pictured in the mug shot at right, about his criminal history and sex offender status, he hung up the phone.

TSG adds that CP Distributor will re-submit a Pedobear-less ad in the April coupon book.

We should do everything we can to shut down this obvious child porn sharing business. NO sex offenders should EVER be in control of computer related business materials. Dicks needs to go to jail for life. Kudos to the clever artist who exposed him, and hopefully this business will go down in flames.

But here’s the thing… our country’s criminal justice system was supposedly founded on the idea that criminals would be rehabbed so they could function in society. Your comment is directly in line with the narrow minded, uber-conservative, ignorant pricks of middle America who argue with democracy when they don’t get their way. This man is entitled to run a business with his sister. He is entitled to be treated fairly when he pays someone to produce an ad for him. Do I think he’s an idiot and should probably burn in the afterlife for what he did (assuming there is one)? Sure. But as an American he has rights and it’s people like you, RSO Hunter, who allow ignorance to perpetuate. If this guy believes in god then let him deal with him. Our court system has already dealt with him in a manner that this country deems appropriate and if you feel it should be more severe, then perhaps you should run for office.
