Sad news out of Tampa, Florida: Professional wrestling legend Randy “Macho Man” Savage died today in a car accident, according to TMZ. He was 58.

TMZ says it “spoke with Randy’s brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 10 AM … and lost control of his vehicle.”

According to one report from the Florida Highway Patrol, “Savage was driving a 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he ‘veered across a concrete median … through oncoming traffic … and ‘collided head-on with a tree.’ His wife Lynn was a passenger but survived with ‘minor injuries.’”

Even though wrestling is a scripted enterprise, Savage, born Randall Mario Poffo, was a consummate professional and a legendary entertainer. He held 20 title belts in his long career and was a seven-time world champion (in the then-WWF, WCW and USWA. He played both a “heel” and a “face,” wrestling lingo for bad and good guys, and played both parts with equal aplomb.

Savage is known for many amazing bouts, but his feud with Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat is truly legendary. The WrestleMania III fight with Steamboat ranks among the greatest matches in the history of professional wrestling. Watch Part I of their feud here (more on YouTube).
