We understand the point of being a triple threat: you sing, you dance, you act. But why do some celebrities and pseudo-celebs seem to want to add government official to their résumés?
Arnold Schwarzenegger just left his post as Governor of Caleeforneea, but we soon may have a new celebrity in office: Former 2 Live Crew front man Luther Campbell may be running for Miami city mayor.
We can just see it now: “Luther Campbell: Vote for Me With Yo’ Face Down, Ass Up”
According to Yahoo!’s The Ticket blog, “The flamboyant ex-rapper and onetime adult-film star, who now writes a column for the Miami New Times, says he’ll make a bid for City Hall if the city’s current mayor, Carlos Alvarez, is thrown out of office in a recall election currently scheduled for Mar. 15th.”
It continues: Campbell, a.k.a. “Uncle Luke,” is perhaps best known from 2 Live Crew’s legal skirmishes with Florida authorities, who attempted to ban the group’s seminal 1989 album, “As Nasty As They Wanna Be,” on obscenity charges.
The album boasts songs such as “Me So Horny,” a rap about having sex with lyrics such as “I won’t tell your mamma if you don’t tell your dad/I know he’ll be disgusted when he sees your pussy busted/Won’t your mamma be so mad if she knew I got that ass?/I’m a freak in heat, a dog without warning/My appetite is sex, ’cause me so horny.”
Campbell and the group successfully sued to overturn the ruling, with the case reaching all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. (One of their champions: current Justice Elena Kagan, who defended the album by saying it couldn’t be obscene because the lyrics weren’t sexually arousing.)
Campbell wrote in the New Times his plans if he were to become mayor. He wrote he would push city and county officials to go after slumlords and implement beautification efforts in Miami’s poorest areas.
He also laid out his plan for schools. Campbell wants to separate public schools into three sections. “We need to have three types of them: one for kids who plan to attend college, one for those who don’t, and a third for the knuckleheads,” Campbell wrote, “A big reason F-schools exist is that you have a lot of knuckleheads bringing good students down.”
Campbell says he’s ready to defend his exploits as a former rap star and says it won’t deter him from running.
“I have no problem addressing the many controversies that have been a part of my life. I will have no problem answering questions about the negative side of my life. I look forward to my opponents digging up every wrong thing I have done,” he wrote, “So let’s bring it.”
Below is Campbell’s resume, compiled by HyperVocal:
Name: Luther Campbell A.K.A. Uncle Luke, Luke Skywalker (Before George Lucas sued), and Luke
Employment: Concert Promoter, Owner of Luke Records, 2 Live Crew Member, Appearance in “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories”, Sport’s Talk Show Host, The Ticket, on Miami’s 790, Writer for the Miami New Times, and Producer of Adult Film “Luke’s Bachelor Party”
Law Suits: George Lucas filed a legal case against Luke Skywalker Records, which shortened its name to Luke Records in response, 2 Live Crew had a legal suit brought against them for their album “As Nasty as They Wanna Be” because it was seen as vulgar and obscene, and members of 2 Crew Live sued Campbell for unpaid royalties from Campbell’s first solo LP, “Banned in the USA.” which was basically a 2 Live Crew record.
So will Campbell be saying, “Me so…the next Miami mayor?” Let us know what you think below.
