Who’s Japan’s Kanye? “Larry Kudlow Doesn’t Care About Japanese People”

Posted March 13, 2011 11:15pm by

Even before the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station reactors began releasing radioactive steam in the wake of Friday’s 8.9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami, even before Sunday night’s explosion, we knew the loss of life would be significant. Even when the death toll was only in the triple digits, we knew it’d hit the thousands, and possibly tens of thousands. We knew this story — that 2,000 bodies have been discovered in Miyagi Prefecture, 8,000 or more missing — was coming.

But at least one man felt no need to express compassion and human decency as news unfolded on Friday. CNBC, one of the most egregious examples of the failure of modern media, wanted to make clear that the economic fallout from the devastating earthquake, the aftershocks and the tsunami that will likely result in the deaths of more than 10,000 people in Japan is much more important than those deaths.

When Larry Kudlow’s on-air colleague set him up by saying “All in all, the market taking this in stride,” Kudlow struck with this: “The human toll here looks to be much worse than the economic toll and we can be grateful for that.” Yes, for that we can all be grateful. Our portfolios are safe.

Kudlow, realizing his egregious error, took to Twitter to apologize. Because nothing says “sincere apology” quite like than 140 characters from your smartphone.

If you are one of those who does care about the human toll, here’s how to donate to Japan:

Red Cross: Text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 from your phone. Be advised, this will ensure your donation goes to the general Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund; to send to Japan directly, donate from the Red Cross website.

Salvation Army: To contribute to earthquake relief, text ‘JAPAN’ or ‘QUAKE’ to 80888 to make a $10 donation or visit SalvationArmyUSA.org.

Convoy of Hope: A non-profit for disaster relief efforts. You can donate either online or via text message by texting TSUNAMI to 50555.
