Intelligence in Congress?! New Jersey Congressman Rush Holt Beats IBM’s Watson
Just when you thought all was lost for humanity, a Democrat named Rush stepped up and showed that some of us might still have an edge against the computers.
Rep. Rush Holt (D-New Jersey) reportedly beat the supercomputer Watson that took down all-time Jeopardy! winners Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter.
After Watson’s first match, we reported on some of the stranger guesses the supercomputer made while playing off against his human opponents, but we’ve yet to receive word whether the same options screen popped up in this game.
Holt was playing the supercomputer with four fellow congressmen in a non-televised exhibition game that was being called the Watson vs. Members tournament. The game was intended to showcase IBM’s machine and highlight the importance of technological development to the future of the country.
Holt announced his victory on Twitter: “I played a full round against @IBMWatson tonight and was proud to hold my own: the final tally was Holt $8,600, Watson $6,200.”
Rep. Rush Holt isn’t just your average member of Congress, however. He holds a PhD, and before joining Congress was the Assistant Director of Princeton’s plasma physics lab for more then a decade. His supporters in New Jersey proudly tout that fact on bumpers stickers that read “My Congressman is a rocket scientist.” He had appeared on Jeopardy! before, almost three decades earlier, and sustained a five-game winning streak.
“Watson was just a little Atari when I was on the show 3 decades ago,” Holt tweeted before going on the show, showing off his nerdy side. “He’s grown up & I’m slower than I was then. I watch in awe.”
Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Jared Polis (D-CO), Nan Hayworth (R-NY) and Jim Himes (D-CT) were the other members of Congress that played with him. While none of them boast the sort of intellectual credentials that Holt does, all of them hold professional degrees in the sciences making it a formidable match up. Still, his fellow members were pretty impressed though all the rest of them finished far behind .
“I seriously CANNOT believe that @rushholt beat @ibmwatson,” Himes tweeted after the match.
We don’t know which is more surprising: that a human was able to beat the supercomputer, or that there are actually intelligent members of Congress. Both are pretty shocking.
At least we know that there might still be some hope for humanity.
