Not to be outdone by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Oscar nom announcement, the Democratic Party has leaked the host city of its 2012 presidential convention: Charlotte, North Carolina.

The information was leaked by party officials on the condition of anonymity. The formal announcement wasn’t scheduled until later Tuesday.

North Carolina went for Obama in 2008 by less than 15,000 votes, making it a vital win that helped usher Obama into the White House.

Charlotte reportedly beat out St. Paul and St. Louis, Minnesota and Cleveland, Ohio.

Party conventions aren’t necessarily as significant as they once were, but it’s still an opportunity for everyone to get together, throw a few back, hear some good speeches and shower their nominee with praise.

Republicans announced in May 2010 that they planned to hold their 2012 convention in Tampa, Florida.

If the Democrats are looking for a keynote speaker with some real chops, The Nature Boy Rick Flair has always billed himself as Charlotte’s favorite son. He’d dazzle and “woooooo” the crowd. And President Obama can take a page from Flair’s book: “To be the man, you gotta beat the man.”
