Journalists, politicians and celebrities gathered on Saturday night for the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington DC, the event affectionately known as Nerd Prom.
SNL head writer and Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers emceed the dinner, and he delivered the night’s most funny-cuz-it’s-true jab: “Donald Trump often talks about running as a Republican, which is surprising,” he began. “I just assumed he was running as a joke.”
Barack Obama pulled no punches, flawlessly unleashing a nearly 19-minute presidential presentation that began by poking fun at the birther madness with Hulk Hogan’s “Real American” theme song. The president took it from there, saying “My *fellow* Americans” as he started his routine.
President Obama struck a fine comedic tone — not too harsh, not too lame. He hit the birthers, Fox News, Donald Trump, NPR, his poll numbers and much more. Watch it here:
It’s nice to know that if the president is voted out of office in 2012, he’s got a career in comedy.
Seth Meyers hit even harder, blasting politics and politicians, celebrities and reality stars:
So what was this night all about? The AP reports, “The association was formed in 1914 as a liaison between the press and the president. Every president since Calvin Coolidge has attended the dinner. Some of the proceeds from the dinner pay for journalism scholarships for college students.”
Contrary to what he told us on Thursday night, Jason Biggs did not streak the dinner.
