Dakota Meyer Awarded Medal of Honor, Drinks with Obama
Marine Corporal Dakota Meyer on Thursday received the Medal of Honor at the tender age of 21, two years removed from braving enemy fire multiple times in Afghanistan in an attempt to save fellow U.S. service members in the Ganjgal Valley in the Kunar Province.
But the Greensburg, Kentucky badass insists he’s no hero. After all, from his point of view, the three Marines and Navy corpsman he rushed to save were already dead.
With the help of some friendly Afghan soldiers, he got the bodies to a safer area where they could be extracted. During his search, he also saved the lives of 36 other soldiers, transporting them to safety or providing cover fire for them to safely retreat, according to the CNN story of his incredible heroism.
According to his Medal of Honor citation, Dakota “personally evacuated 12 friendly wounded, and provided cover for another 24 Marines and soldiers to escape likely death at the hands of a numerically superior and determined foe.” Here’s more of Meyer’s story:
The day before receiving his medal from President Obama, he had one request for the staffer who called him in preparation: to have a beer with the President.

President Obama was more than willing to oblige the request and the two sat down for a beer on Wednesday. Now, before you snarkily judge Meyer for his request to have a drink with the Muslim Socialist Who Is Weakening This Nation We Love Dearly, also keep in mind that the gentleman also insisted that when he is honored, simultaneous commemorative services be held at other locations to honor the memory of his colleagues who died the ambush and his rescue attempts.
According to the White House, Meyer has become the third living recipient, and first Marine, to be awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan. Here’s the ceremony.
“Hero” or not, Meyer deserves the honor. What he did was nothing short of incredible. Next up for the president on his Dakota Beer Calendar: a beer with Dakota Fanning.
