Dead Island Has a Fancy Trailer, Zombies

Posted February 17, 2011 12:12pm by

You thought zombies were just fun and games didn’t you? Well Dead Island is a game. And hopefully it’s fun. But if the trailer is any indication of what the experience will be like, it’s pretty tragic too.

Man, is that whole backwards thing an awesome gimmick. This is like Memento with zombies. After years and years, and generations and generations of storytelling, we’ve become accustomed to the formulas and know what to expect next. But for whatever reason our feeble human minds have trouble deducing the narrative in the other direction. Or something.

Anyway, the result is awesome. Although, the first Gears of War trailer was similar in tone, featuring the famous Gary Jules cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World,” and that game turned out to be a roided-out, balls to the wall curb-stomp-fest so I guess you can’t read too much into it. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it, and GoW3 is on my short list this year, just saying let’s just take the trailer at face value.

What say you? Are zombies overdone yet or what? Honestly the last zombie game I enjoyed was Dead Rising and there were some seriously unfun parts of that (all the boss battles). And since I’m a poor little blogger, you’ll have to tell me if Dead Rising 2 was any good. But from what my broke ass can tell based on commercials and DLC ads on Xbox Live, every freaking game out there has a zombie mod. Is it too late for a new franchise to cash in on the undead love?

Something tells me we’ve got a different kind of uprising to worry about. But you know here at WG we’re always a fan of games that get artsy, make us feel stuff, and approach the cinematic experience of film. So for now, at least the trailer is turning a few heads DELICIOUS BRAINS.
