State police arrested 41-year-old John Allison after a grocery store security officer watched him rub “a packaged stick of pepperoni on his exposed penis,” according to 7news.

Police said Allison then put the food back on the shelf. Here’s where they lose us:

In addition to public lewdness, Allison was also charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief because Hannaford is unable to sell the pepperoni.

Hmm, seems to me someone out there with a bizarre food-slash-phallic fetish would be willing to splurge on the item should it come up for bid.

CCTV footage captured what happened next: The man took out a knife and tried to snatch the French woman’s purse. Only she fought back, kicking and screaming, and eventually the pair ran off without the bag.

Police say the thieving pair of purse snatchers did make off with the lady’s camera, but everything else was intact.

Almost a full year later, police this week arrested 54-year-old Salvatore Ambrogio and 25-year-old Valentina Rizzo for their role in the attack and charged the pair with aggravated armed robbery, according to 9News.

When America last saw Kai, the Smash Smash Smaaaash Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker, we declared “We’re all rooting for you, Kai.”

Kai’s story may have taken a turn for the worse:

Authorities in Union County have issued an arrest warrant for an internet celebrity in the homicide of Joseph Galfy, Jr. in Clark, New Jersey
 
The suspect is identified as Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, a 34-year-old Internet celebrity and is well known on Facebook and YouTube as “Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker.”
 
McGillvary is homeless but considers himself “homefree” and relies on the generosity of strangers for food, lodging and transportation.
 
He is also known as Kai Lawrence, Caleb Kai Lawrence and Kai Nicodemus.
 
The victim, Joseph Galfy, was found inside his home on Starlite Drive on May 13, 2013 after officers received a call to check on his well-being.

Authorities say Kai cut his hair to alter his appearance and is being considered armed and dangerous. Uh oh.

But that’s not stopping the ACLU’s new ACLU Action initiative from launching a campaign that urges Modern Family’s producers “to script a wedding episode for popular gay characters Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker.” The ACLU put up a website and wants you to RSVP accordingly.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitch, responded via Instagram: “Love this! Thank you ACLU! Maybe once Prop 8 is overturned!”

“The freedom to marry is being advanced in American living rooms as much as in court rooms,” said ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero. “As we wait for the Supreme Court to rule, we want to keep this issue on the minds and screens of Americans everywhere.”
 
ACLU Action aims to activate the ACLU’s 750,000 online supporters to have a political impact through social media and new grassroots organizing tools, and to reach out to new audiences, with its message of equal rights for all. By calling on Americans to “RSVP” that they will watch Cam and Mitch get married, the campaign will let the “Modern Family” producers know that a wedding episode would be a ratings hit. The campaign will put marriage equality before new and younger audiences through social media channels.

Here are three quick reasons why this is a woefully misguided sham:

1. While marriage is an important step for some couples, and a great option for every couple, stop trying to force every gay tandem in America to join the institution. Some couples are happy living their lives the way they are now — keen partnership, total kinship, tranquil domestic lives, a family already. Mitch and Cam have an adorable daughter, they’ve been together forever, their extended family loves them and surely they’re happy as is. Many/most real couples live this way, and they don’t need a document to fulfill someone else’s dreams for them.

2. Telling show producers and writers what to do is bossy horseshit. Modern Family has done wonders showing what life is really like for a monogamous gay couple. Producers and writers on the show have perhaps accomplished the best “humanizing” work for the LGBT community in entertainment history. Who are you to tell them what direction they should go next? Let them continue to do with their characters what they see fit. You want Mitch and Cam to get hitched so badly? Make your own freakin’ show and have those people get married.

3. Have we run out of real-life issues affecting real-life people? Perhaps the producers of Modern Family should start their own online campaign telling the ACLU what they should do next — spoiler: it’s defending the rights of real people. Cynically, this seems like nothing more than a Big Data Grab, an opportunity for the ACLU to collect names, addresses and zip codes for when they really need amateur activists on actual injustice.

ACLU, your effort is duly noted. Thanks for trying to fight for the rights of the LGBT community. But this is a waste of everyone’s time.
