Rejected Google Doodles: Rick James, Bitch
The Greater Internet loves a Google Doodle. They’re light, they’re fun, they teach you about geek stuff which is cool stuff, and sometimes they move around and let you play with them. Google “is always excited to hear ideas from users,” but not from us. So here are our Rejected Google Doodles …
REJECTED DOODLE FOR AUG. 2
On this day in 1991, 43-year-old funk singer Rick James was arrested on suspicion of sexual torture. Sexual. Torture. That’s super freaky.
Just one year after MC Hammer adapted his “Super Freak” for “U Can’t Touch This,” James and his 21-year-old girlfriend were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, forced oral copulation, making terrorist threats and furnishing narcotics.
What happened? The pair was chillin’ with 24-year-old Frances Alley, and when they became suspicious that she had stolen their drugs. So, like any sane couple, they tied her up, severely burned her about 20 times on the stomach and legs with the hot end of a crack cocaine pipe and forced her to perform sex acts. FOR DAYS. Some legends say it was three, some say six.
Rick James was eventually convicted of two charges, but he avoided the torture charge, which somehow made it okay nearly 20 years later for Charlie Murphy and Dave Chappelle to turn him into a cultural hero with the infamous “I’m Rick James, Bitch” sketch.
So, Rick James, today we celebrate you with this …
