Darren Aronofsky Needs Just 30 Seconds to Turn You Off Meth Forever Director Darren Aronofsky was tapped to direct a handful of anti-meth PSAs for the Meth Project. Turns out that was a great idea, considering moviegoers still have nightmares from when Aronofsky scared them off drugs the first time with Requiem For a Dream. These spots will likely dissuade any thoughts you may have from getting your meth on. They are disturbing, terrifying, and effective. Be warned, these are clearly a Darren Aronofsky joint. Hard to believe that anti-drug PSA makers have been trying to get people to consider not using drugs for decades when all they had to do was sign up Aronofsky for a few commercials. Quite different from the comical Rachel Leigh Cook heroin spot a decade ago. (via Towleroad)
happyhappyhappy 23.12.11 @ 10:14 pm I’d have to disagree with you Mike Yoo, I don’t think this necessarily demonstrates genius (nothing against Mr. Aronofsky). The power of these clips seems to come from their realism. Aronofsky is making what actually happens apparent to us, not creating it or pulling it from his imagination. It is a travesty that most people are able to ignore this side of humanity. Thanks, Mr. Aronofsky for giving us a ‘glimpse’ of the world. (Although perhaps, in the Lukac sense, the ability to convey a ‘glimpse’ is the sign of real genius. I dunno, I think the world is just a shitty place and the shittiness is not what an artist/genius should aspire to portray.)
Anthony L 18.02.12 @ 9:14 pm I think the genius is in only 30 seconds he can convey the horror, debasement and self-destruction of meth quite effectively without exaggeration, pure raw pain. Compared these to the government ‘just say no’ campaign.
