Comedy Central Poised to Take Over the World

Posted April 29, 2011 8:50am by

Despite all the confusion over its new logo, Comedy Central is doing everything right right now.

If you’re as big a South Park fan as me (or my mom), you couldn’t possibly wait a minute longer than necessary to watch the new season’s debut, and therefore opted to turn off that DVR in favor of something many of us hardly find ourselves doing anymore: watching our favorite shows live.

The network itself is, in fact, making an effort to encourage live viewing by making Twitter integration a part of their shows. Why is that important? Well, it’s hard to say what direct impact social media can have on TV ratings, but I can at the very least, anecdotally attest that it can make the shows more fun to watch.

Think about it: you get to talk with your buddies about how much you’re enjoying the show (or how that situation on Workaholics is exactly like an office prank you pulled when you were working in a secluded section of your office with 2 friends and no adult supervision), without stepping on the show itself by ACTUALLY talking.

But more importantly, it sends the viewer a signal that Comedy Central is a trailblazer. I love the 90s, but this ain’t no Nick at Nite. Not only are they looking down the road at the future of the television experience, they’ve been taking risks and pushing the limits of alternative comedy ever since 1997, when one of the Internet’s first “viral videos” was developed into little show called South Park. I’ll be the first to admit that when South Park debuted, I didn’t know what the hell I was watching, just that it was completely ridiculous and unlike anything I had seen before. It wasn’t really the show that it is today, but that’s just because it’s gotten better and better every single season. And on the coattails of Matt and Trey’s outlandish humor, the network has stuck its neck out time and again with risky alternative programming. And now, a perfect storm of avant gard comedy is a-brewin’. Those of you who willfully subjected yourself to commercials during last night’s SP probably noticed a spot that highlighted the tsunami of top-tier content we’ve got to look forward to in spring/summer.

On Tuesday you’ve got Tosh.0, which I don’t see how anybody can really hate. Outrageous clips from around the web, coupled with Daniel’s unrelenting and ruthless machine gun style. Obviously the show’s format is nothing new – it’s been around since a long forgotten time when John Henson was considered funny, but Tosh is way funnier than him or any of the others who’ve stolen that show, including G4′s Web Soup host Chris Hardwick. In Tosh’s version, it’s not the videos that carry the show but the host. Paired with Tosh is the new Sports Show with Norm MacDonald. I reviewed the first episode over on Awful Announcing, but if the short version is this: You’re an adult. You should know by now whether or not you think Norm MacDonald is funny. If you do, you probably first made that decision watching him on SNL’s Weekend Update back in the 90s, so you’ll love the format.

The real treat in the lineup is the new show in the official South Park piggyback slot (Wednesday at 10:30), which got off to a wonderful start at capturing the coveted 18-36 male demo. If you haven’t seen Workaholics yet, you owe it to yourself to check out this combination of The Office and Old School.

But what about those days that aren’t Tuesday or Wednesday, you ask? And all the hours in between these 4 shows? Why, there’s fresh Daily Show everyday if you’re into that, although I find Colbert about 1000x time funnier and have granted him comedic genius status. Even if you don’t always agree with the opinions he ironically slams, you’ve gotta respect the satire. He’s new every weekday too, and the rest of the lineup is rounded out with various stand-up specials and tons of reruns of Tosh, South Park, and Futurama, my favorite show that nobody seems to like. If you’re a fan, 1) you’ll be excited that new episodes are coming Thursdays in June, and 2) let’s be friends.

Summer days are sure going to be a nice, but oh, those summer nights.
