The dictionary UPDATE: As some of you pointed out, No. 9 and 10 might literally be true (“flying” does, in fact, also mean “moving through the air”). Good work, word sleuths! Cazna52 31.07.12 @ 6:43 pm I would be tempted to let number 10 slide. If the kids were to thrown about violently enough they would have quite likely been airborne for a moment which I think could be called “flying”.
Ceorlic 01.08.12 @ 5:47 am UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg once said tax avoiders are “literally in a different galaxy”.
RedShirt 01.08.12 @ 10:37 am I don’t really think #9 qualifies. First of all, it’s not ‘This Guy’ because those words were spoken by a girl. Secondly, it’s from the series Dollhouse, about characters who have their memories and personalities erased, becoming something of a blank canvas, and are then imprinted with other personas, skills, etc. They do become what they do, I believe the term literally applies in this instance.
Hlgirl 01.08.12 @ 11:11 am As others have said, #9 and #10 shouldn’t be on this list. #9 is a character from a TV show accurately describing what happens to the dolls as their brains are overwritten for each assignment, and #10 is very likely an accurate description of what happens to unrestrained bodies in a vehicle when momentum suddenly meets inertia.
Katie Rucker 02.08.12 @ 2:26 am I don’t understand why everyone gets their panties in a bunch about people using the word, “literally” in a hyperbolic fashion.
Sam 04.08.12 @ 8:59 am Because, now I can no longer believe that you mean what you say since you are now changing the definition of words. Figuratively, it can easily turn into crying wolf.
